To get started making your layered cake topper with Cricut, upload the free SVG cut file into Cricut Design Space and adjust the size as needed. I cut my cake topper at 8 inches wide. You can adjust the colors of each layer so it is easy to know which color of cardstock to use for each Cricut mat.

Add Glue

I used lightweight 65lb cardstock for the colors and a medium weight cardstock for the top black layer on my layered cake topper with Cricut. Cardstock can be cut on any Cricut using the fine point blade that comes with all Cricut machines. Once your pieces are cut, flip over the Cricut mat to gently peel the paper off the mat.

The bottom and middle layer of the Happy Everything layered cake topper is designed to be glued together. Use a good quality paper glue with a precision tip to help with the thin areas and apply glue lightly. Cardstock only needs a small amount of glue to stick well.

For the top layer, I added small pieces of double sided adhesive foam which can be cut to size with scissors. Adhesive foam adds extra dimension to your cake topper projects by adding space between layers.

Leave a space on one of the middle letters of the word “everything’ without any foam as a space for the cake topper stick. Use hot glue to add the stick and then place the top layer. The adhesive foam gives enough space for the cake topper stick to be fit in between the layers. For my Happy Everything layered cake topper, I used a clear acrylic lollipop stick.

Layered Cake Toppers with Cricut FAQs

How do I design a homemade cake topper myself?

As you are designing cake toppers, be sure to consider how you want to secure each layer. The foam needs more space than glue. Additionally, cake toppers are suspended on a stick. All the pieces need to touch each other and be welded together or be attached to a second layer. For example the lower case letter i poses a challenge because the dot of the i is on its own. In this case I will see if an upper case I would work for the design or use a second layer to hold everything in place.

How do I make a layered cake topper sturdy?

It’s the adhesive foam or glue that provide the stability for your layered cake cake topper. Add foam around the edges and the middle to prevent sagging.
