Learn how to price your cake toppers to sell like a pro
How much do I price Cricut cake toppers to sell? Is a question I hear often from other crafters. Maybe you started by searching for what other people are charging for similar cake toppers. But you don’t know for sure if that price actually makes sense for your business.
I recently interviewed my friend and experienced paper crafting Melissa from FamilyForeverDesigns to ask this question.

Why do I need a strategy to price Cricut cake toppers?
Don’t I just add up the material cost to figure out the price?
Even though you love crafting, pricing your Cricut cake toppers too low can actually cause you to lose money and get burned out over time. You deserve to be paid fairly for your hard work.
However, it can be difficult to determine the right price for your items, since there are many factors to consider such as material costs, listing fees, shipping costs, and the value of your time. By taking all of these factors into account and creating a solid pricing strategy, you can ensure that your Cricut cake topper business is successful and sustainable.

How do I create my strategy to price Cricut cake toppers to sell?
There are a variety of different thoughts on how to price your homemade crafts that you can find online. Etsy suggests calculating profit margins by:
subtracting all of the expenses that go into creating a product (cost of goods) from the sale price, and then dividing that number by the sale price (revenue) and multiplying by 100 to generate gross profit margin as a percentage.
But what really goes into the “cost of goods”? materials, your time, fee’s, shipping, packaging?
For Melissa, this is what she includes in her pricing:
Listing fees ($0.20), Transaction fees (6.5%), Processing fees (3%), Shipping (if it's included in the listing price - mine are usually $3-$5 per item), materials (my glue/adhesive numbers are estimates - I don't actually figure out how many ounces of glue I use), my time (assembling time only - not cutting or packaging time), I don't include any marketing/promo material costs because I include that separate on my taxes.
How to price Cricut cake toppers to sell?
With the cake topper price calculator spreadsheet, you can determine with confidence the right way to price Cricut cake toppers to sell.
Once you open the spreadsheet, you’ll see some gray boxes where you need to fill in your information. For example, you’ll need to add how much you want to make per hour and how long it takes you to make each topper.
Next, you’ll go to the materials section and add in all the materials you used, along with their costs and how many you used. This helps you figure out how much it costs you to make each topper.
Then you move down to the sale price calculation section. The material cost is copied over from the already calculated material cost. The next line says x .25 and this is where you add in a little extra to cover things like fees, ink, and wear and tear on your cutting machine.
Once you’ve filled out all the info, the spreadsheet will calculate the wholesale price and the retail price for you. You can also adjust the markup percentage to fit your needs. And if you’re adding shipping, you can add that cost too and the spreadsheet will update the final price for you.
I tried it out with my Woodland Fairy cake topper and it turned out to be $28 retail price and $33 with shipping. Give it a try and see how much you should price Cricut cake toppers to sell!
What happens if the price of my Cake Topper seems too high?
So now that we know how to price out your cake toppers to sell, you might be wondering how you can make them even more affordable. Let me share a few ideas that can help bring down the cost of the materials you use.
- Buy in bulk: You can compare the cost of buying individual sheets versus packs of material and see which one is cheaper.
- Buy sales: You can sign up for email lists from your favorite suppliers, and they’ll let you know when they’re having a sale so you can stock up on materials at a discounted price.
- Reduce your time: To save time on making cake toppers, you can try assembling them in batches. This means you cut out the same pieces for multiple projects and put them together at once, instead of doing each project one by one.
- Accept less custom requests: If you stick to making a few favorite designs rather than always doing custom orders, you can save money by not having to buy extra materials for each project. You’ll be able to anticipate the materials you need to take advantage of sales.
What happens if you don’t use a whole sheet of cardstock and have enough left over to use for another project?
I asked Melissa the same question and here is how she handles it:
Since the cost of a single sheet of cardstock isn't that much, and I try to get the most out of each sheet, I consider each sheet I make any cuts on as one sheet of paper.
How to include printer ink for print then cut?
In the sales price calculations section of the cake topper price calculator, there’s a calculation for unaccounted for fees and costs. This should cover your printer needs, but if you do a lot of print then cut work and need more ink, you can increase the small upcharge from .25 to .5. That way, you’ll be sure to cover your printer ink costs when pricing your Cricut cake toppers.
