DIYing party decorations gives you the ability to personalize and customize every aspect of the party.
You can create a happy vibe with bright colors or a more relaxed vibe with neutrals. The party decorations will influence the mood of the whole event.
I’m all about party decorations that you can make during nap time. The best tool to DIY paper party decorations is a Cricut cutting machine.
A Cricut cutting machine is an at home smart cutting machine that connects to your computer or mobile device. In a similar way that a printer works with your computer to print something, the Cricut machine works with your computer to cut out a design.
A Cricut machine will quickly and precisely cut paper to create any paper party decoration you need.

What can you DIY with a Cricut for a DIY Rainbow Party?
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.
Using a Cricut cutting machine you can cut out a wide variety of projects, but the best part is that you can customize everything.
You can choose the exact colors, you can add a name or age and you can make as many or as few as you need.
Here are a few DIY Rainbow Party ideas for a birthday party you can make with a Cricut Machine:
- Banner: Add the name of the child
- Cake Topper: Add the name and age of the child
- Cupcake Toppers
- Favor boxes: Add a saying to the top of the box
- Gift Tags
- Cupcake Wrappers
- Food Tents: Label food and include if they are nut free/gluten free

Wait… I don’t have to bake a cake?
I know what you’re thinking…
You have so much to do to prepare for the birthday party. You definitely do not have the time to bake and decorate a cake.
The solution is simple.
Buy a cake and DIY a cake topper.
I find working with paper much more forgiving than baking. Cake toppers are one of my favorite paper crafts. You can take a plain jane, store bought cake and dress it up in any theme instantly.
Another reason I love Cricut made cake toppers is that you can continue to enjoy the cake topper after the party is over.
Here are a couple of ways to reuse a cake topper:
- Save in a document sleeve as part of a memory binder
- Add to a shadow box and put on display
You can’t help but smile with this colorful DIY rainbow party cake topper. Easily change the colors from traditional rainbow colors to a pastel rainbow or even an ombre collection of shades.
Use your Cricut machine to cut all the layers in cardstock and assemble the layers together with glue. As the final step, add cake pop sticks to the back with hot glue. Super easy!
How to make rainbow cupcake decorations
In a similar fashion, store bought cupcakes can be upgraded with colorful cupcake toppers.
I love that I can send my husband out to grab a dozen cupcakes and customize them quickly with cupcake toppers. You can make the toppers in advance and have them ready to go for the cupcakes.
One less stress to worry about for your party.
DIY Rainbow Party Banner
And I’m not stopping there…
A party isn’t a party without the birthday boy/girl’s name on a banner.
A colorful cloud shaped banner is another party decoration for a rainbow themed event. I love how this banner is easy to create and designed to hide the ribbon.
Get organized with Food Tents
Another way to DIY a rainbow party is to organize the food buffet with food labels on paper tents.
Help protect both kids and adults with food allergy labels such as nut-free or gluten-free. That way, party go-ers can confidently make decisions without the need to ask and pull you away from the party.
My favorite part of these DIY rainbow party food tents is that you can write and cut all in one step with a Cricut machine.
Use Cricut pens and your Cricut machine to write the text perfectly using a handwritten style font.
DIY Rainbow party gift tag ideas
Is it me or do you also love to match your gift tags with the party? For me, matching the whole gift bag or wrapping paper feels a little overwhelming but a little gift tag – I can handle that.
Use the same five colors from the cake topper to create the DIY Rainbow party gift tag.
Don’t forget the card
Lastly, complete the DIY rainbow party with a colorful card to go along with your gift.
Check out this tutorial by Shawn Mosch on how to make a rainbow card with your Cricut machine.
My favorite part about this card is the overlapping rainbow petal shapes that cover the front of the project.
